Joe Gregory & his long-time friend and partner CB Long got into Boxers in 1950, during college. Joe had served a stint in the Army as a paratrooper (we always knew he was crazy – anyone who would voluntarily jump out of a perfectly good plane …). When he returned to Louisville he went to buy a dog for his mom and ended up with a life-long career in dogs – breeder, exhibitor, handler and now international, all-breed judge. He joined the ABC in 1958 and is a life member.
He apprenticed to Phil Marsh and obtained his AKC handlers licensed in 1952. That same year Phil Marsh handled their dog, Truce Talk of Clover Downs to Grand Futurity Winner under Mazie Wagner. Truce Talk was a son of CH Ursa Major of Sirrah Crest (sire of Bang Away) and finished the next year. In 1955 his half bother finished – both out of Ulanie of Cross Acres – CH Blue Chip of Clover Downs. Truce Talk’s daughter, CH Hot Cinders of Clover Downs also finished in 1955.
He and Burr next bought Jered’s Sovereign from the Garichs at 6 mos. Sovereign was Grand Futurity winner under Estelle Slesinger in 1955, with Joe handling. Sovereign finished in 1957. He was by Bang Away out of Spellbinder’s sister, CH Jered’s Sweet Stuff who was BOS at ABC 1954 (some considered her the best one). Spellbinder & Sweet Stuff were grandchildren of CH Vick Wick of Sirrah Crest – a littermate to Verily Verily, Bang Away’s dam. Joe also handled CH Jered’s Scintillator, Sovereign’s sister.
Joe & Burr bred their Vick Wick daughter, Zizzle Zee of Sirrah Crest, to Sovereign in 1955 and produced Legacy of Clover Downs. She was sold to Dr. Robert Burke (Marquam Hill) who bred her to Bang Away and got CH Marquam Hill’s Comanche and then to CH Barrage of Quality Hill LOM and got Flamingo – dam of Salgray’s ‘F’ litter.
In the meantime, Joe was a busy man in the show ring. He campaigned the BIS Boxers CH Frazer’s Parade Meister in 1955, 1956 & 1957; CH Canyonaire’s Man on Fire, and the top bitches CH Rancho Chiquito Yanna, and CH Capriana’s Step Aside (BOS ABC 1967 to Ambush). In 1958 he won the ABC Regional with Mr. & Mrs. Ted Wurmser’s CH Terudon’s Kiss Me Kate a Barrage daughter, & was BOS to Wagner’s CH Marjack’s Golden Windjammer handled by Phil Marsh, at ABC. She was also BOS at ABC & the Regional in 1959. In addition he won Grand Futurity with CH Bramerwood’s Rock-A-Billy under Lena Ludwig. In 1962 he campaigned CH Dempseys Copper Gentleman, a Spellbinder son, to Most BIS and Group 1 and BOB at the Regional. Sovereign, Copper Gentleman and Step Aside were all shown for the Smiths.
The famous CH Treceder’s Painted Lady he acquired from Rita Jo Mount (Shine & Progression) for Don & Mary Smith’s ‘Talked About’ kennels in Ohio. Painted Lady was BOB at ABC in 1963 & 1964 and at the 1963 Regional. That made four straight BOBs at ABC & the Regional, an enviable record. Painted Lady held the record for bitches with most all-breed BIS – 49 – until Joe gave CH Kiebla’s Tradition of Turo her 50th BIS in 1995.
Joe retired from handling in 1966 when he married fellow dog person Mamie Reynolds. He became a judge in 1967. Mamie had been showing since the age of 8 and had had several breeds – most recently toys. Mamie passed away in 2015. Joe & Mamie’s daughter, Evelyn Gregory-Haag is also ‘in dogs’ and is now a judge (Evelyn judged the 2014 Regional – BOB GCH HiJinks This Is How I Roll, BOS GCH Brisbane & Blue Monday’s Diamonds Are Decadent).
When Joe judged the ABC Futurity in 1962 he found Legacy’s daughter, CH Salgray’s Fanfare, for Best Puppy and CH Flintwood’s Rabble Rouser for Grand Futurity (from 12-18). Joe has judged the ABC several times. The first assignment was the 1966 Regional. BOB was CH True Lee Fair with BOS CH Canzonet’s Musical War Dance. In 1969 bob went to CH Arriba’s Prima Donna and BOS went to CH Rocky of Shawnee Trail. In 1976 he gave the nod to CH Twin Willow’s Mister T of Five T’s with Leon DePriest handling, and BOS to CH Main Street’s Miss Liberty.
At his next ABC assignment in 1987 BOB was CH Wagner’s Wilverday Famous Amos LOM (handler – Dick Baum) and BOS to CH Woods End Chas’N Rainbows. At the 1992 Regional CH Kiebla’s Tradition of Turo with Chris Baum, was BOB and BOS CH Shieldmont’s Let’s Make a Deal. In 1995 at the Regional, CH Turo’s Futurion of Cachet was BOB with BOS to CH Boxwood’s Emerald Lady. At the 2013 Regional, BOB went to GCH Mahogany’s Will of the Wisp with BOS GCH Brisbane N’Blue Monday’s Diamonds Are Decadent. He judged the Top Twenty in 1991 when the winner was CH Kiebla’s Tradition of Turo. Joe is a very popular judge and we are sure we will see him again in the ABC ring.
