I recently received a grant to begin examining why boxers get so much of a specific type of lymphoma (called CD4+ T helper cell lymphoma). It's pretty clear to me and my collaborators at UNC that there is a strong genetic component to this disease. We are going to collect blood from 200 boxers without lymphoma first (they have to be 7 years old or greater) and then collect blood from 200 boxers with lymphoma later. The study is called a GWAS (genome-wide association study), which has been used in human medicine to find genes involved in causing many diseases, including cancer. If we can pinpoint the gene(s) that are causing this, we may be able to develop better, more targeted therapeutics and possibly breed the disease out of the boxer population.
I'm looking to collect one tube (purple-top-contains EDTA) from as many boxers that are 7 or older that I can in the next 3 - 4 months. The grant will pay for shipping costs -- the tube just needs to be sent to me via FedEx in a chilled container.
